Here you can keep up to date with the activities of our group of advocates as we travel to Peru from the 5th to the 16th of February 2008 to see the work of Compassion.
Advocates are sponsors with a heart for our ministry who volunteer some of their time on an ongoing basis to promote Compassion in their churches and within their spheres of influence.
The team will spend time meeting staff and children in projects, visiting the homes of Compassion sponsored children, seeing how the country office operates and meeting formerly sponsored children. We will try to update the site each day whilst we are in Peru and we hope you find it interesting. Enjoy!

Like everyone really looking forward to Peru ,(a place I have always wanted to go to but no visit to Machu Picchu a shame) although a little nervous as well, particually about the altitude & possible side effects from that. Want very much to see the work first hand so I can speak from experience.
Still have to sort out injections but hope most will be covered from other trips. What has been advise on malaria tablets?

Hi
I'm Maria, been an advocate for about 6yrs. My first trip and I am real nervous! Leaving my hubby and 4 kids behind me. My GP said i didnt need Yellow Fever, just Hep A, Typhoid,& Tetanus. I checked on net & it said neither area was a malaria area so not taking any tabs. Looking forward to meeting up with everyone soon.
Maria
My GP did Yellow fever & booster for Hep B (others already have) map showed malaria in the Chiclayo area so advised to take tabs for both places to be safe - cost £65 so haven't yet but better safe than sorry?? Might check with Sheena. See you soon Lyn
Hello - I have finally managed to get onto the blog system and am very much looking forward to meeting all my fellow advocates on 5 Feb.
I was also wondering about malaria tablets. From the "Fit for travel" website it looks as if there is no risk, or only very low risk, of catching malaria in Lima, but Chiclayo seems to have some risk. From the itinerary it does not look as if we are likely to be outside after dusk much in Chiclayo (when the mosquitoes do most of their biting apparently). For just a couple of days visit I am wondering if it is worth enduring the weeks of side effects from malaria tablets, and whether wearing insect repellant and covering up completely in long sleeved shirts etc might suffice. At the end of the day I suppose it is for each of us to weigh up the pluses and minuses, but if Sheena happens to be reading this blog I would be very grateful to hear what she thinks.
Like Maria, I haven't had the yellow fever jab, but have had the other jabs she mentions.
Look forward to seeing you
Ann
Hi Ann,
Yes, I feel the same about the malaria tabs and I will only be wearing longs & spraying on heavy for those 2 days! I said it to my GP and she didn't advise me otherwise. Every GP is different and so is everyone. I have been in malaria areas before for short periods and I don't take the tabs. Thats just me though. As to the Yellow Fever, I did get it last week in the end. Not cos we are at risk, but because on the web I read that some countries won't let you in afterwards if you have been in a country which has Yellow Fever. I was afraid of that happening!
God Bless and time is marching.. we will soon be all together on our big adventure! Praise the Lord.
Did anyone listen to song 8 on 'voices of the least' cd. Get you focused!
Maria
